Do I have to pay a company to register my LLC?
No. Every state lets you file directly on its official site for just the state filing fee, and this page links you straight there. Services exist for convenience (they fill the forms and track deadlines for you), not because they have special access. Is the EIN really free?
Completely. The IRS issues EINs directly at irs.gov in about five minutes at no charge. Anyone charging for an EIN alone is charging for a free thing.
What is a registered agent and do I need one?
Every state requires one: a person or company with a physical address in the state that receives legal mail for your business. If you live in the state you can usually be your own. Registered agent services (about $100 to $200 a year) exist for privacy and for out-of-state filings.
Which state should I form in?
For most people: the state where you actually live and work. Forming somewhere famous for business (like Delaware) while operating at home usually means registering in BOTH states and paying twice. Talk to a professional before doing anything fancy.
