   Master colony health before selling anything

   Pollination contracts pay on colony strength (almond contracts specify frame counts, commonly six-frame minimums with premiums for documented eight-frame colonies), so the craft of keeping colonies strong through winter IS the product. Run 5 to 10 hives for a season or two, join your state beekeepers association, and register your apiary as your state requires.

   Around 50 hives is where pollination becomes a real business line: $25,000 to $45,000 buys the woodenware, bees, extraction basics, and handling equipment. Regionally, apples run about $44 to $54, cucumbers around $67, watermelon near $50, and blueberries need the highest stocking density of any major crop. Non-almond regional contracts are less lucrative but far less competitive and skip the cross-country trucking.

   Book growers directly or through brokers

   Regional fruit and vegetable growers book by relationship: call orchards, berry farms, and seed growers in winter, quote per-colony rates with frame-count guarantees, and deliver strong hives on schedule. For almonds, established brokers place out-of-state colonies; margins are thinner but volume is enormous. Written contracts cover placement dates, pesticide communication, and colony strength verification.

   Plan the logistics like a trucking business

   Migratory pollination is night moves, pallets, straps, and a truck and trailer rated for the load. Losses from moves, pesticide exposure, and weather are normal operating facts; contract pricing and colony reserves must absorb them. Many mid-size operations skip long-haul migration entirely and serve growers within a half-day drive, trading peak almond money for lower risk and cost.

   Run all the revenue streams the bees make

   The strongest operations stack pollination contracts with honey (retail $8 to $14 a pound), nucleus colonies and queens for the booming hobbyist market ($175 to $275 per nuc, $35 to $55 per queen), and wax. A 50-hive operation running the full stack has documented gross in the $60,000 to $110,000 range at 40 to 55 percent margins; a single-stream honey operation at the same scale earns a fraction of that.
