   Find the buyers before the pallets

   Call pallet yards, recyclers, and brokers within driving distance and ask what they buy: which sizes, which grades, at what price, delivered or picked up. The standard sizes trade constantly and command the best prices; odd sizes may only be worth wood. This one afternoon of calls is your business plan.

   Learn to grade in ten seconds

   The common grading language separates clean, structurally sound pallets from ones needing repair from scrap. Learn to spot cracked stringers, broken boards, and unusable frames at a glance, because loading a pallet the yard will reject costs you the same fuel and sweat as loading one it will buy.

   Set up free removal arrangements

   Small manufacturers, distributors, garden centers, flooring and tile shops, and print shops accumulate pallets and often pay for disposal. Offer scheduled free removal (or a small haul fee where the mix is poor) with a clean, reliable pickup day. Always get permission in writing; pallets behind a store are not automatically free, and taking them without an agreement is theft.

   Add basic repair to multiply value

   A hammer, a pry bar, nails, and boards salvaged from scrap pallets let you turn broken-but-close pallets into sellable grade. Repair is the difference between selling half your load and selling most of it, and it costs you parts you got free.

   Route it and price your time honestly

   Cluster pickups geographically, know your fuel and hours per run, and track what each source's mix actually yields. Some stops will not be worth the visit; drop them without guilt. A tight route with three good commercial sources beats a scattered day of maybes.

   Grow toward standing contracts

   Once volume is steady, negotiate regular supply deals with a yard or direct with businesses that buy pallets, and consider a trailer or box truck as the numbers justify it. Some operators grow into full pallet yards; others keep it a lean one-truck route with excellent margins on their time. Both are wins.
