Understand the Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Distributor Model

   Start from the documented reality, not the pitch

   The honest baseline: across the industry, income-disclosure data and FTC analysis show the large majority of MLM participants earn very little, and many lose money once starter kits, minimum purchases, and fees are counted.    Reputable companies publish an Income Disclosure Statement showing what participants actually earn. Read it before anything: it typically shows most participants earning small amounts or nothing, with tiny percentages at the top. Also review the FTC Business Opportunity Rule protections. If a company hides or lacks this disclosure, treat that as a serious warning sign.

   Count the full cost you can lose

   Starter kits, monthly minimum purchases (autoship), event and training fees, and unsold inventory are real money you can lose. Total the true annual cost of participation and treat it as at-risk capital. Never buy inventory to hit a rank or spend money you cannot afford to lose; inventory loading is both a financial trap and a pyramid warning sign.

   If you proceed, sell product to real customers

   The only honest and lawful path is to actually sell the product to real end customers who want it, at a genuine retail margin, the way any small product reseller would. Do not build your plan on recruiting a downline, and never pressure friends and family to join for promised income. If you cannot sell the product profitably to real customers, the business does not work regardless of the recruiting pitch.

   Compare against honest alternatives

   Before joining any MLM, compare it to single-level direct selling (its own card here, framed as NOT an MLM) and to simply reselling a product you own outright. Often you can sell products you love with better margins and no downline pressure. Consider whether the MLM structure adds anything for you beyond the recruiting layer, which is the part most likely to lose you money and cross legal lines.
