   A compact mill is a train of machines: a paddy cleaner, a sheller (dehusker), a separator, and a polisher (whitener), optionally a grader and color sorter.    Your throughput depends on steady input. Contract with local growers or a cooperative for paddy, or build a base of custom-milling farmers, and understand harvest seasonality and storage (paddy must be dried and stored to mill year-round). A drying and storage setup smooths seasonal supply and lets you mill when prices favor you.

   Handle food-safety and quality

   Milled rice is a packaged food: it needs FDA facility registration in the US and a basic food-safety plan, clean handling, and honest labeling (variety, weight, any organic claims certified).    Sell where milling adds the most value

   Commodity bulk rice is thin-margin and dominated by large mills; the small-mill edge is specialty and local. Heritage and regional varieties, organic rice, freshly milled premium rice, custom milling for growers, and private label for local grocers and restaurants all pay more than commodity. Byproducts (bran, husk) add incremental revenue. Branded specialty rice is where a mini mill outperforms.
