   Choose a species and prove the market

   Match a species to your market and your husbandry ability: salmonids, tilapia, barramundi, and hybrid striped bass are common RAS candidates. Confirm real buyers and price points before designing anything, because a technically perfect system growing an unsellable fish still fails. Scheduled, predictable harvest volume is the advantage you are selling versus wild-catch.

   Secure permits and water discharge approval

   Aquaculture facilities need a state aquaculture or fish farm license, species approvals (some species are restricted or invasive), and almost always a water-discharge permit (NPDES in the US) governing what leaves the site. Fish health, importation, and biosecurity rules also apply. Confirm the full permit stack before construction, because retrofitting a facility to pass is far costlier than designing to code.

   The system is the farm: pumps, biofilters, oxygenation, solids removal, backup power, and alarms that keep water alive when something fails. A single overnight equipment failure can kill a whole cohort. Budget for redundancy and monitoring, not just the visible tanks.

   Source juveniles and dial in feeding

   Buy fingerlings or run your own broodstock and hatchery, then manage feeding to the feed conversion ratio, the single biggest lever on profitability.    Grow out and harvest on schedule

   Track growth, mortality, and biomass against target harvest windows so you can promise buyers consistent volume.    Contract buyers and price on cost

   Sell to farmed-seafood-distributor buyers, retailers, and restaurants that value scheduled volume wild fisheries cannot guarantee. Price against your true cost per pound including feed, energy, and mortality.
