   Sell capacity to contractors first

   Your first customers are mechanical and industrial contractors whose own shops are full, EPC firms needing overflow spool capacity, and equipment builders needing skid frames. They already have drawings, specs, and steady volume; direct plant work comes later through approved-vendor lists. Quote fast, hit dates, and return clean documentation packages, because that is the entire scorecard.

   Price from weld inches and shop hours, honestly

   Fabrication bids are built from material takeoffs, weld inches or diameter inches for pipe, shop hours, consumables, and testing. Track actual hours against every estimate from job one; fab shops die from optimistic bidding far more often than from bad welding. Progress payments on larger fabrication contracts protect cash while material sits on your floor.

   Let quality documentation be the marketing

   In this trade the differentiator is boring and decisive: weld maps, material traceability, NDE reports arranged with testing partners, and on-time delivery. A shop that ships correct, documented work becomes the overflow partner contractors guard jealously, and referrals move through project managers faster than any advertising.

   Climb the value ladder deliberately

   The growth path runs from structural weldments to pipe spools to full process skids (pumps, valves, instrumentation mounted and tested), each step raising contract size and margin. Power, water treatment, food processing, and energy projects all buy from the same shop floor, which diversifies you against any one industry's cycle.
