   A foal is 11 months in utero, then must be raised, handled, and often started under saddle before it sells, so your money is tied up for years per horse while feed, vet, farrier, and care costs accrue every day. Budget the full carry cost of each young horse to a saleable age, because underestimating the years of expense between breeding and sale is how breeders run out of cash before the payoff.

   Build reputation and multiple sale channels

   Sell through the channels your market uses: major and regional auctions, private sales, and direct relationships with trainers and buyers. Reputation compounds (a breeder whose horses perform gets premium prices and repeat buyers), so document your horses well, prove them where you can, and treat every sale as marketing for the next foal crop.
