   Understand seasoning, because it is the whole product

   Green wood does not burn well, creates creosote, and produces angry customers. Wood generally needs six months to two years of drying depending on species and climate, split and stacked off the ground with airflow and cover. Selling unseasoned wood as seasoned is the fastest way to destroy a local reputation, and in some states it is also a consumer protection violation.

   Firewood is sold by the cord and legally defined fractions of it in most states, and vague terms like 'truckload' or 'rick' are regulated or prohibited in some. Separately, many states and counties restrict moving firewood beyond a set radius, and campgrounds often require certified heat-treated wood, because untreated firewood spreads invasive insects. Check your state agriculture department's firewood rules; they shape both your market and your competition.

   Buy the equipment that changes your throughput

   A quality splitter is the single biggest productivity purchase, followed by saws, safety gear, a truck or dump trailer, and eventually a conveyor or processor if volume justifies it. Rent or buy used at the start and let volume prove the case for a processor, which is a serious capital item.

   Build the repeat accounts

   Homeowners buy once or twice a season, but wood-fired restaurants and pizzerias, campgrounds and state parks, short-term rental owners, event venues, and retail stores that resell bundles buy repeatedly and predictably.    Publish price per cord and per fraction, state the species and moisture content, and be clear about delivery radius and stacking fees. Customers overwhelmingly choose the seller who is specific, because the industry has a reputation for short measures and wet wood.    Plan the calendar and the cash

   You buy and process in spring and summer and sell in autumn and winter, which means capital is tied up in inventory for months. Kiln drying, if you scale to it, shortens that cycle and opens the certified heat-treated market, but it is a real investment. Budget for the working capital gap before you commit.
