Build a Decentralized or Protocol-Based Social Network

   Grasp the data-layer versus app-layer split

   The core idea is separating the data layer (identity, social graph, content, owned by the user and portable) from the app layer (the interface and experience, which can be any of many competing apps). On open protocols like ActivityPub (the fediverse) or the AT Protocol, a user's followers and identity are not trapped inside one company's silo; they can move to another app and keep them. Understand this split cold, because it changes everything about how you build and compete.

   Choose your layer: app or protocol

   You can build an app on top of an existing open protocol (faster, you inherit an existing network and users' portable graphs) or contribute to the protocol layer itself (harder, more foundational, less direct revenue). Most founders should start at the app layer, building a better client or a specialized experience on a protocol that already has users, because it partly sidesteps cold-start: the network partly exists already.

   Rethink your moat

   Traditional networks are defended by lock-in: your followers are trapped, so you stay. On an open protocol, users can leave and keep their graph, so lock-in is gone by design. That means you must compete on being genuinely the best app (features, moderation, experience, community) rather than on holding users hostage. This is better for users and harder for you; be clear-eyed that portability removes a moat incumbents rely on.

   Solve monetization honestly, because it is unsettled

   The business models for open-protocol social are still maturing, and that is a real risk, not a detail. Because you do not own the data monopoly, classic surveillance-advertising models fit poorly; more plausible levers are premium app features and subscriptions, hosting and infrastructure services, custom feeds and algorithms as a paid product, and services for other builders on the protocol. Go in expecting to experiment, and do not assume a proven money model exists yet.

   Handle moderation in a decentralized world

   Decentralization complicates trust and safety: when data is portable and apps are many, who moderates, and how? In practice apps and servers still moderate their own spaces, and you are still legally responsible for what your app or server hosts, facing the DSA, UK Online Safety Act, COPPA, GDPR, and mandated CSAM scanning like anyone else. Decide your moderation stance explicitly (what your app allows, how it handles federation with other servers) because open does not mean lawless, and regulators do not accept decentralization as an excuse.

   Bet on the direction, but size the uncertainty

   Portable social graphs and open protocols are a credible direction for where social networking is heading, which is the upside. But adoption is still early, the economics are unproven, and the technical demands are high, which is the risk. Treat this as a high-conviction, high-uncertainty bet: build because you believe in the open model and can sustain a long runway, not because it is a safe path to revenue.
