   Learn the trade before selling it

   A dispatcher's real skills are reading load boards and market rates, negotiating with brokers, planning trucks into good next-load positions, and handling setup packets, rate confirmations, and detention claims. Courses exist, but shadowing a working dispatcher or driving experience teaches faster.

   Stay on the right side of the FMCSA line

   Under FMCSA's June 2023 guidance, dispatchers work for carriers as their agent: written dispatch agreement with each named carrier, loads sourced from brokers and boards on that carrier's behalf, payment from the carrier only. Negotiating with shippers directly, accepting loads before having a carrier, or taking payment from brokers or factoring companies crosses into broker territory, which requires broker authority and the $75,000 bond.

   Set up lean and professional

   LLC, dispatch agreement template reviewed once by a transportation attorney, load board subscriptions, a phone headset, and simple software for tracking loads and invoicing. This business starts under $3,000.

   Land the first carrier honestly

   New owner-operators drowning in paperwork are the natural first clients; find them in trucking groups and through factoring and insurance agents who serve them. Offer a trial week or first-load-free; a dispatcher who books one good week sells themselves.

   Price as a percentage and earn it daily

   Standard pricing runs 5 to 10 percent of gross per load, sometimes flat weekly fees. Your job is beating the rates and utilization the carrier would get alone by enough that your fee is obviously worth it; publish weekly recaps showing gross, miles, and rate per mile.

   Grow carrier by carrier, not lead by lead

   A solo dispatcher handles roughly 3 to 5 trucks well; past that, hire and train. Reputation moves through the owner-operator community fast in both directions, and referrals from happy carriers are the entire growth engine.
