Learn the signs: any mention of suicide, self-harm, or wanting to die; signs of severe depression, trauma, psychosis, or an eating disorder; substance dependence; abuse; or a person who is not safe. Keep a short list of local and national resources, including a crisis line, ready to hand, and practice the warm handoff so it is natural, not awkward. Referring someone to a therapist or emergency help when they need it is not a failure of your practice; it is the mark of a coach who can be trusted with the deep water.

Structure helps a client feel held and helps you run a sustainable practice, and it turns a nice conversation into work that moves someone forward.

   Form a simple business entity, use a scheduling and payment tool and a private way to meet (video or in person), keep light and confidential notes, and consider liability insurance appropriate for coaching. Build a calm, honest presence: a clear website that says exactly who you help and what you do and do not offer, and generous, grounded content (a short reflection, a talk, a piece of writing) that lets someone feel your presence before they ever book. Referral relationships matter here too, with therapists who want a spiritual companion for clients whose needs are not clinical, with faith leaders, with wellness practitioners. Let your integrity be the marketing, because in this field the people who need you are wary of anyone who sounds like a salesperson, and reassured by anyone who sounds like a steady human being.

   Deepen your craft as the practice grows

   Because nothing external forces you to grow, the coaches who last are the ones who keep their own inner work alive and keep learning: further training, spiritual-direction certification, supervision or peer circles with other coaches, and your own consistent practice. As you grow, you can add group offerings, retreats, or courses that scale your reach beyond one-to-one time.
