   Learn how scenic work differs from real construction

   Sets are built to be seen, moved, and struck, not to last thirty years. That means lightweight framing, modular flats, walls that fly out for camera, finishes that read correctly on lens, and a tolerance for speed that would be reckless in a house.    Start as a sub before you are a shop

   You will be handed a production designer's elevations and asked for a number and a date. Bidding scenic work means estimating materials, labor hours, finish time, transport, install, and strike, then adding a realistic contingency for the changes that always come. Underbidding is the number one way scenic shops fail; the schedule does not move when the drawings do.

   Serve more than one industry

   Film and television is one customer. Regional theater, trade shows and exhibit booths, brand activations and pop-ups, retail displays, museum exhibits, escape rooms, immersive experiences, and photo studios all need the same skills. Diversifying across those markets is what keeps a shop busy when local production slows.

   Handle insurance, safety, and labor properly

   General liability, workers compensation if you have employees, and job-site safety practice are not optional. Rigging, platforms, stairs, and anything holding weight must be built to real standards, and in union markets some work carries labor agreements. Get this right before you get busy.

   Turn strike into a second revenue line

   Sets get struck as fast as they get built, and someone has to do it. Charging for strike and disposal, and reclaiming reusable flats, hardware, and materials for the next job, adds revenue and reduces the material cost of the build after it.
