   Build or secure the permitted facility and equipment

   A single-stream MRF is a large permitted building with a high-capacity sorting line: conveyors, screens, magnets, eddy-current and optical sorters, increasingly robotic pickers, and balers, integrated by a design firm (its own card here). This runs into the millions to tens of millions. Permitting, siting, and financing are a multi-year process, not a quick launch.

   Attack contamination relentlessly

   Single-stream recycling is convenient for residents but delivers contaminated loads (food, plastic bags, non-recyclables) that degrade commodity value and can jam equipment. Contamination management (education, inbound inspection, sorting technology, and reject handling) is central to whether the plant makes money. The operators who survive are obsessive about inbound quality and bale purity.

   Manage commodity risk and off-take

   Recovered commodities sell into markets you do not control, and export-market shifts have swung MRF economics dramatically. Secure off-take relationships for your baled material, watch bale-purity specifications closely (buyers reject contaminated bales), and structure contracts so commodity downside does not sink the operation. This is a thin-margin, high-throughput business that rewards operational discipline.
