Buy or finance the core kit, and a reliable vehicle to carry it, and expand instrumentation as your work justifies it.

   Your deliverable is a report: what wastes energy, how much, and the prioritized fixes ranked by cost and payback, ideally tied to available rebates and tax credits. A clear, actionable report is the product, so learn to present findings in plain language homeowners understand and contractors can bid from. This is also what earns referrals and repeat work from the programs that fund audits.

   Plug into rebate and utility programs

   Much of the demand is program-driven: utility energy-efficiency incentives, state and federal rebates and tax credits, and weatherization programs often require or subsidize a certified audit. Get on utility and program contractor lists, understand which incentives apply in your area, and help customers access them, because an audit that unlocks a rebate is far easier to sell. These programs can be a steady referral pipeline.

   Build referral lines and decide on upsell

   Homeowners facing high bills are the direct market, but real estate agents (energy-conscious buyers and sellers), insulation and HVAC contractors, and builders needing code-compliance ratings all refer audits. Decide whether you stay independent (audit only, unbiased) or also perform the improvements; independence builds trust, while pairing with insulation and air-sealing work raises revenue. Either way, referral relationships are what fill the calendar.
