   Build the experience that gives you standing

   Doula students are buying your birth room hours, not your slides. The field's own tiering logic (agencies commonly distinguish doulas at 4 to 10 births, 11 to 50, and 51 or more) is a useful honesty check: trainers credibly sit in that top tier. Alongside births attended, gather teaching experience through mentoring new doulas, speaking at meetups, and assisting at existing workshops before you lead one.

   Choose your path: faculty or founder

   Two routes exist. Becoming an approved trainer for an established certifying organization (DONA, CAPPA, and regional bodies all use field faculty) gives you their curriculum, brand, and student pipeline in exchange for their requirements and fees. Founding your own program gives you the margin and the curriculum but makes you responsible for credibility, materials, and every student you attract. Many trainers start as organizational faculty and add independent workshops later.

   Understand the price architecture you are entering

   Students currently pay $400 to $1,200 for most initial doula trainings, with DONA's fuller workshop path near $2,000, typically for a multi-day workshop (DONA's model pairs roughly 45 instructional hours with a 16 hour workshop plus attendance requirements). Your workshop pricing lives inside those expectations: a cohort of 8 to 15 students at those rates is a strong weekend of revenue, and costs are venue, materials, and your preparation time.

   Aim for the approved-training lists

   In states with Medicaid doula reimbursement, enrollment requires completing a state-approved training, and each state maintains its own list. Getting a program onto that list (or teaching for an organization already on it) connects your classroom to a funded pipeline: community organizations, health departments, and workforce programs actively buy approved training for cohorts of community doulas. This is the single biggest structural tailwind in doula education.

   Build the curriculum like a product

   A complete program needs the workshop itself, pre-work reading, skills practice structure, post-workshop certification requirements (births, evaluations, essays), and student support through completion, which commonly takes students 3 to 12 months. Develop workbooks and materials you own; curriculum development for other birth-worker programs is itself a paid service lane once your materials prove out.

   Layer the formats

   In-person workshops anchor the business, but the education stack has more floors: self-paced online modules, hybrid cohorts, continuing education for practicing doulas (loss support, business skills), agency staff training, and mentorship or practicum supervision as a premium tier. Each format you add smooths revenue between workshop weekends and widens your geographic reach beyond driving distance.

   Keep one foot in the birth room

   Trainers who stop practicing slowly lose the stories, the recency, and the credibility that filled their workshops. Keep a small client load or regular backup shifts, and let your teaching marketing be your practice: students become colleagues, refer clients they cannot take, and staff the collectives and agencies your region needs.
