🔦 Side Hustle Reality Calculator
Most side hustlers quote their gross rate. But after self-employment tax, expenses, and the unpaid hours (admin, driving, waiting, posting), the real rate is often half the sticker number. This shows you the truth, then what to do about it.
Your side hustle profit stacks on top of your job income, so use your marginal rate. 12 to 24 percent covers most people; check your last return.
Your TRUE hourly rate
$14.84
What you keep per month
$1,187
Taxes per month (SE + income)
$463
Same hours at your day job rate
$2,000
You gross $2,000 a month, which feels like $33 an hour. But after $350 of expenses, $463 of taxes, and 20 unpaid hours, you keep $1,187 for 80 hours of your life: $15 an hour. Those same hours at your day job would pay $2,000. The fix is not more hours; it is higher prices, lower costs, or a better model.

How is self-employment tax calculated?
The standard convention: 15.3 percent (Social Security plus Medicare, both halves) applied to 92.35 percent of your net profit. Half of the SE tax is then deductible before income tax. This calculator does both steps for you.
Why count unpaid hours?
Because your life does not distinguish between paid and unpaid time. If gig driving pays for 25 hours but takes 32 with positioning and waiting, dividing by 25 flatters the number. The average side hustle loses roughly 45 percent of its gross rate to expenses, taxes, and unpaid time.
My true rate is low. Should I quit the hustle?
Not necessarily; fix it first. The three levers are price (most underpriced hustles can raise 10 to 20 percent without losing customers), expenses (fees and supplies quietly eat thin margins), and unpaid time (batch admin, drop low-value tasks). If none of those move the number, that is your answer.
